Technical questions
Technical questions to settle before a quote
Zoryra is a custom CNC quoting platform. These answers follow the drawing and the acceptance criteria. Casting, injection molding, die casting, and 3D printing are outside the quote.
After the quote, what still has to be checked on a sample?
The AI price is a reference. Hardness, roughness, polish, and critical dimensions follow the drawing and engineering. When they affect assembly, order a paid sample before a larger lot.
Can you manufacture from a sketch or a physical part, with no drawing?
Not as a production release. We need STEP or an engineering drawing. A sketch or printed model only shows shape. Structure, material, and tolerances come before the quote.
The fit is “just right”, glove-removable, and must not loosen. How do we specify that?
Put the use conditions in the note: vibration, glove access, removal cycles, and fit gap. The drawing still needs measurable sizes and tolerances. Feel does not replace a drawing.
How do you quote many part numbers with only a few pieces each?
Upload CAD for each part number. MOQ is 1, with machining and transit shown separately. Repeat supply or a difficult fit goes to engineering before the order.
One part, several use cases. Should every case have its own holes?
No. Freeze one mounting face and hole pattern. Other cases use a swappable adapter or cover. One drawing controls the holes.
The material is expensive. Copy the old part or redesign?
Start from the current drawing or a measured model. If wall thickness, radii, or the split change to save material, issue a new drawing before quoting. Do not produce from a photo of the old part.
How should machining tolerance grades be read?
A smaller grade number is tighter. Untoleranced features follow the title block. Precision holes, fits, and anything inside 0.01 mm must be called out and confirmed.
How do flatness, perpendicularity, and position get quoted?
Put them on the drawing with datums. Dimensions alone are accepted as dimensions. Position and profile usually cost more and need an agreed inspection method.
How should Ra be specified?
Call Ra on the faces that need it. Do not put one value on the whole part. Unspecified faces follow a normal machined surface. Polish or grind is a separate note and may change size.
Coarse thread or fine thread?
Coarse is the general choice. Fine suits thin walls, adjustment, or short engagement. Call out the designation, pitch, tap drill, and usable depth.
What should the drawing say so a tap is less likely to break?
Specify the thread, tap-drill diameter, and usable depth. Leave at least 1.5 pitches clear at the bottom of a blind hole. Do not write only “tap to the bottom” on a small, deep thread.
How should heat treatment be specified?
State material, hardness range, and any stress relief. If it is absent, the quote is for the part as machined. Quench, temper, and finishing are separate lines.
Anodize, black oxide, or nickel plate?
Anodize is typical for aluminum. Steel uses black oxide or a plate chosen for corrosion and appearance. Color, thickness, and masked faces must be written, or the quote is machining only.
Why trial the plating on a very small part?
Holes, curves, and tolerances change when the coating adds thickness. Confirm the plated size on a paid sample before a larger lot. An unplated price is not the plated part.
When is 5-axis actually required?
Use it when one setup must cut several angled faces, sculptured surfaces, or holes that are not parallel. A ordinary block can stay on 3-axis. The geometry decides, not the part name.
What matters on a thin-wall part?
Call out the minimum wall and the distortion you can accept. Very thin walls chatter and move. A paid one-piece sample is the right check before a batch.
Is deburr included?
Breaking ordinary edges is normally included. If you need a true burr-free edge, a specified radius, or no rolled hole edge, write that. Acceptance follows the note, not “it looks smooth”.
How is sheet-metal springback handled?
Put the bend angle and inside radius on the drawing. Springback depends on material and thickness. The part is accepted to the drawing angle. Deep draws far outside normal practice are not a standard instant quote.
Can a very high draw ratio be instant-quoted?
No. Ordinary sheet-metal bends can be uploaded. A deep draw well beyond a normal cup needs a reviewed die and a step count. It does not use the standard AI tier.
PDF and CAD disagree. Which one wins?
Name one file before the order. We do not cut while they conflict. Prefer STEP for geometry and PDF for tolerances and notes, and say so in the confirmation.
Can the material be substituted?
We can propose a grade. We will not change it on our own. The substitute goes on the confirmation because hardness, corrosion, and weldability may change.
Which inspection report should we ask for?
A dimensional report, FAI, or CMM can be selected. A full layout is not the default. Balloon the critical dimensions. The report covers only what was agreed.
Should we specify the machine’s positioning accuracy?
No. Specify the tolerance on the part and how it will be checked. The shop matches the machine to the drawing.
What is a casting, and do you quote it?
Casting pours molten metal into a mold for a complex blank. Common routes are sand, permanent mold, investment, and die cast. Zoryra does not quote casting, injection molding, die casting, or 3D printing. The quote covers CNC mill, turn, and drill, 5-axis, sheet metal, prototypes, and finishing.
Can wall thickness, shrink, and a mold be estimated here?
No. Injection needs a mold, a resin, and a shrink review. That process is outside this platform. If the job is a CNC insert, upload only that CNC file.
Can wire EDM be quoted?
Yes. Milling is still the usual path. When a sharp internal corner, a narrow slot, or hardened steel needs wire EDM, write it on the drawing and it is quoted. See the wire EDM page. No machine count or tank size is claimed.
