Stepover scars on a shallow 3D surface

A shallow surface shows a stripe at every stepover of a 10 mm ball mill. The scallop height in the CAM was set to 0.01 mm. The stripes are still visible after a light polish and they catch a fingernail.

Scallop height is a geometric leftover. A stripe you can feel is often a dwell at the end of each pass or a reversal mark, not the scallop the dialog box promised. Change the cut direction so the stepover is not across the way the eye looks, or add a cross finish.

A 10 mm ball on a shallow surface needs a small stepover and a constant tool load. If the machine hesitates at each pass, the stripe is the hesitation. Smoothing or a higher look-ahead tolerance may matter more than another zero in the scallop field.

Polish is not a stepover strategy. If the part is shown, program the finish you can ship without a person with a stone.
