A basket of 'stainless' rings is magnetic. The customer says 316. 316 should be basically non-magnetic. These stick hard to a magnet and they machine like a harder stainless than we expected.

A strong magnet on a part sold as 316 is a reason to stop and ask for a cert or an alloy check. Cold work can make some austenitic stainless slightly magnetic, but 'sticks hard' plus a tough chip is often 304, 17-4, or a martensitic grade.

Do not quote or promise corrosion performance on a magnet test. Sort the lot, machine nothing else, and send one chip or one part for a handheld analyzer if you have it.

Feeds for 316 will burn a 400-series edge. Treat the unknown as the harder metal until the paper arrives.
