A shaft arrives with hard chrome on the bearing journals. We need to turn a groove in the middle of the chrome and not nick the journals. The chrome is flaking at a test scratch.

If a scratch flakes the chrome, the bond is already poor and a cutting tool will lift a sheet of it into the groove. Stop and tell the owner of the shaft. Cutting loose chrome ruins the tool and the journal next to the groove.

Where the chrome is sound, grind the groove or use a tool meant for it, and mask the journals with something that does not require a pry bar to remove. Tape that leaves adhesive is its own scrap.

Do not blend a flaked edge with emery and ship it. The flake is the defect.
