A Ti-6Al-4V roughing cut threw a bright chip and a small fire in the chip pan. We put it out with the dry extinguisher. The insert was a steel roughing grade at a steel feed. Flood was on but the chip was leaving the cut hot.

Titanium chips burn when they are fine and hot. Use a grade and a geometry meant for titanium, a feed that makes a thicker chip, and coolant that hits the cut. A steel roughing insert at a steel speed is how the pan fire starts.

Do not leave a pile of titanium chips in a dry corner of the pan. Empty them while they are cool, and keep the extinguisher that matches a metal fire, not only water.

After a fire, look at the insert seat and the coolant nozzle before the next part. A knocked nozzle is the next fire.
