4140 prehard versus annealed for a one-off shaft

A one-off shaft can be made from 4140 annealed and then heat treated, or from prehard. We have both bars. The print asks for a final hardness and a bearing fit. Lead time matters more than saving a bar.

If the fit is a bearing journal and you can hold it in prehard, prehard wins on a one-off because you skip distortion from heat treat. If the print needs a hardness prehard cannot reach, you must machine soft, heat treat, and grind or hard-turn the fit.

Do not turn the bearing fit to final size in annealed material and hope heat treat holds a tenth. It will move.

Say on the router which bar you used. The next one-off will copy you, including your mistake.
