17-4 in H900, light finish pass, the insert edge is gone in a few parts. Roughing in the annealed state was fine. We heat treated and came back for a finish. The insert is a general steel grade.

H900 is a different job from annealed 17-4. Use a grade meant for hardened stainless, a small depth, and a feed that does not rub the edge. A light finish that is too light just burnishes and chips the edge.

If you can finish closer to size before heat treat and leave a grind or a small hard-turn stock, you will spend less on inserts than hard-turning a full finish from a soft program.

Do not reuse the annealed speeds. They are why the edge is gone.
