Hydraulic chuck that will not repeat on a thin ring

A 2 mm wall ring in the hydraulic chuck runs out 0.05 after you unclamp and clamp again. A solid slug in the same jaws runs out 0.01. Pressure is at the chuck's normal setting.

A thin ring at full chuck pressure becomes a triangle and then springs when you release it. Drop the pressure until the ring stays round, and use pie jaws or a bore that supports the wall.

The slug lying to you is the point. The chuck is fine. The part is not a slug. Size the pressure to the part, and write it on the setup sheet in bar or psi, not as 'normal.'

If you must hold the ring hard to take a heavy cut, rough it in a thicker state or on a mandrel. You will not bore a thin ring round in a high-pressure chuck and have it stay round on the bench.
