Fourth axis that loses a degree over a long program

A rotary on a VMC drills a pattern around a shaft. The first hole is on the mark. By the eighth face the hole is late by about a degree. The program uses incremental rotary moves. Backlash comp is on.

Incremental rotary moves stack lost motion if the comp is wrong or the brake is soft. Program absolute angles from a home that you re-zero on a known face, and brake before the drill, not during the index only.

A degree over eight faces is not a drill walking. Put a pointer in the spindle and watch one index. You can see a soft brake or a loose coupling without cutting metal.

Check the tailstock or the chuck gripping the shaft. A shaft that twists under the drill looks exactly like a rotary that lost a step.
