After a 3 mm depth rough on 4140, the next tool in the turret sits about 0.04 mm off in X compared with the morning indicate. The clamp light comes on. The turret sounds normal.

Indicate the same tool before and after the heavy cut. If the turret moves and then returns when cool or when you index twice, the clamp is not seating on chips or the coupling is worn. Clean the coupling teeth before you condemn the encoder.

A heavy interrupted cut can rock a turret that clamps on a tired coupling. The roughing tool may still make size while the finish tool, which you indicated cold, does not.

If a double index brings it back, the fix is the clamp timing or the coupling, and you should not hide it with a different wear on every tool.
