A 3 mm carbide mill in an ER collet ramps into 6061 at 3 degrees and slowly walks out of the collet. Length offset was set at the start. By the end of the pocket the floor is deep.

ER collets do not hold a small carbide shank well under the pull of a ramp if the collet is worn or the nut was tightened on a dirty shank. A short holder made for that shank, or a clean new collet at the right torque, stops the creep.

Set the length, cut a test pocket, and set the length again. If it moved, the tool is pulling and no wear offset will stay honest.

A ramp that is too aggressive for a 3 mm tool pulls harder than a helix with a lighter load. If the holder is good and it still walks, lighten the ramp.
