Deburr before or after the finish pass on a sealing face?

A small aluminum cover has a 0.4 mm edge break called out and a flatness of 0.02 on the seal face. If we break the edge first, the face sometimes goes out. If we face last, the edge is sharp again.

Face the seal last, then break only the edge with a light chamfer tool or a nylon brush that does not load the face. A file or a wheel on the bench is what knocks the flatness out.

If the edge break is on the seal boundary, model it and cut it in the same finish toolpath with a small spring pass. Hand deburr belongs on edges that are not datums.

Check flatness after the deburr, not before. The number that matters is the face you ship.
