A 6 mm cross hole through 32 mm round 12L14 walks about 0.3 mm by the time it breaks out. We spot with a 90 degree spot and peck at 2 mm. The drill is a jobber length.

A spot that is smaller than the drill's chisel, or a spot that is not deep enough to guide the lips, lets a jobber drill skate on the curve. Spot to just over the drill diameter and deep enough that the lips are captured before the peck starts.

A stub drill or a screw-length drill for the first depth, then the jobber if you truly need the length, stays on line better than one long drill from the start.

12L14 is friendly, so this is geometry, not the material. Check that the live tool or the spindle is not pushing the bar off a tailstock-less stick-out.
