I watched a part get tapped home with the air gun brass tip because the stop was proud. The operator says it has always been done and the bore still checks.

If the part needs a hammer to meet the stop, the stop or the jaw is wrong. A tap moves the part and it also moves the stop over time, which is why the bore 'still checks' until the day it does not.

Stone or recut the stop so the part sits under clamp pressure alone. Then indicate it once and stop tapping.

Write 'no hammer' on that setup. Habits survive speeches. They do not survive a sheet the next person has to sign.
