A macro drills a pattern. The count variable is set to the number of holes. The loop runs while the count is not zero and decrements at the start. The last hole is skipped. The first hole is drilled twice on a different version of the same loop.

Walk the loop on paper with a count of three. Decrement at the start skips the last. Decrement at the end doubles the first if the test is wrong. Pick one pattern: set the count, test, drill, then decrement, and prove it with three spots above the plate.

Macros that 'almost' drill the pattern are worse than a long-hand program. A missing hole fails at assembly, not at the control.

Comment the loop in words. The next edit will otherwise flip the decrement again.
