A Haas lathe knocks in the gearbox under about 200 rpm during a facing cut to center. Higher rpm is quiet. The knock is new after a hard interrupt. Finish size is still in tolerance.

A low-rpm-only knock after an interrupt deserves a look before it becomes a gear. Run the face at a higher rpm if the tool allows it so you are not hammering the low gear, and put in a service call with the rpm and the sound.

Do not ignore it because the diameter is still good. Gearbox noise does not fix itself, and a face to center is exactly where low rpm lives.

Check that the insert is not chipped and causing the knock you are blaming on the box. A bad insert is cheaper than a gear and sounds similar at the cut.
