On a comparator the edge of a ground flat is fuzzy and two people pick shadows 0.03 mm apart. The tolerance is ±0.02. Both are experienced. The light is the same setting as last year.

Agree which shadow you pick, upper or lower, and lock the light. A fuzzy edge plus two personal rules is a 0.03 argument. Use a contact method for a ±0.02 if the comparator cannot repeat between people.

Check a gauge block at the same magnification and the same light. If the block also splits by 0.03 between people, the method is not capable, no matter how experienced they are.
