A tenths indicator on a magnetic base and a 0.01 mm indicator on a test stand do not agree on shaft runout by 0.02 mm. The shaft is between centers. The buyer wants 0.01 total.

Check both indicators on a known flat or a gauge block movement of the same amount. One of them is sticky or the magnetic base is nodding. The stand and a recently checked indicator win. A nodding mag base writes runout into a good shaft.

Also watch the centers. A dirty center repeats a false runout that both indicators will believe. Clean the centers and recheck before you condemn the shaft or the tools.

0.01 total is a metrology setup, not a mag-base glance. If you cannot show a gage R&R that can see 0.01, do not promise the number.
